Christmas Party - aka: sugar fueld mayhem

The girls asked me if we could have a Christmas party this year, and I happily said yes. I like hosting parties for kids. I like themed stuff, and I want Sofie and Emily to always feel happy to invite their friends home. Our home is 'different', but I want them to be comfortable bringing their friends here anyway.

We talked about what we all wanted, and quickly agreed that a small party would work best - no more than 6 kids in total. I envisioned myself sitting round a table with the kids, drinking hot chocolate and making fabulous seasonal crafts.

But those of you who have been reading my Blog for  while will already know that my vision is rarely the same as the one my girls are having. Six kids quickly evolved into 10 kids with an age range of 4 - 9 years.

Visions of calm, complex crafting quickly disappeared, and were replaced with the reality of manic, sugar fueled, mayhem. We decorated biscuits, did Christmas colouring pages and made foam Christmas trees.
And do you know what?
It was actually a lot of fun.
The kids tormented me endlessly about my bad German, and my mistakes.
I think this means they are comfortable with me (despite my hopeless German).
They made mess, noise and chaos, but at the end they offered to tidy up, and they shook my hand, thanking me for lunch and the craft.
Their mothers shake my hand, and thank me too. They give me gifts of homemade biscuits and chocolates.
They confess they could never have 10 kids over for lunch.
They clearly think I am slightly insane.

We are different. We do things don't do things like everyone else, but I think we are doing ok.
We are not pretending to be something we are not.
The kids are happy.
They have friends.
When their friends leave I have to mop floors, but it somehow seems worth it.
I think we will have another party again very soon.
And not just because the biscuits I was given were seriously good.
